A needs-based scholarship from The American Legion for children of post-9/11 fallen or disabled service members. It provides up to $20,000 for children of those who died on active duty and up to $5,000 for children of veterans with a VA disability rating of 50 percent or greater, covering the financial gap left after federal and state aid. Recipients may reapply annually up to six times.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be the child or legally adopted child of a U.S. service member who died on active duty on or after September 11, 2001, or of a post-9/11 veteran with a combined VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher. They must be high school seniors or graduates enrolling in an accredited institution in the United States for undergraduate or post-graduate study. The award is need-based and fills gaps remaining after other grants and scholarships.

How to Apply

Apply directly through The American Legion's official application — no essay required. Review the eligibility requirements above first, and give yourself time before the March 25, 2027 deadline.
